Escalon, city in San Joaquin County, California, United States
Escalon is a small city in San Joaquin County, California, set among fields, orchards, and nut groves in the Central Valley. The downtown runs along a short main street with a local history museum housed in the old city hall, a few cafes, and small shops.
Escalon was founded in the early 1900s when the railroad came through the Central Valley, bringing settlers and farmers to the area. Agriculture took root quickly, and the town has remained tied to the land ever since.
The name Escalon comes from Spanish and means something like "step" or "stepping stone", a word that reflects the region's early Spanish-speaking presence. At harvest time, roadside stands appear near the farms, where locals sell nuts, olives, and seasonal produce directly to passersby.
Autumn is a good time to visit when farm stands are active and the Harvest Festival takes place in town. The center is easy to walk, and a car helps if you want to reach the surrounding farms, lavender fields, or Jacob Myers Park.
Jacob Myers Park has a lake where visitors can paddle and fish, which is unusual for a town of this size in a farming region. A short drive away, Lavender Hollow Farm grows lavender and sells handmade soaps and oils produced on site.
