Loleta is a small community in Humboldt County in northern California, situated 14 meters above sea level between Fields Landing and Eureka along the Pacific coast. The area is characterized by farmland and serves as a quiet settlement in the region.
The settlement originated in the 1850s as Swauger Station, named after landowner Samuel A. Swauger, before being renamed in 1897. This name change marked a transition in the community's identity.
The Wiyot people, who originally called this place Guduwalhat, maintained their presence through two reservations near the community. Their connection to the land remains visible in local life today.
The place is easy to explore on foot since the main areas are compact and the surroundings are flat. Visitors should expect simple amenities typical of a small rural community.
The Humboldt Creamery, established in 1893, shifted the economic base from potato farming to dairy production. The facility transformed the area into a regional agricultural hub.
