Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park
Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park, Victorian mansion in Chico, United States
Bidwell Mansion is a three-story brick structure with 26 rooms featuring Italian architectural elements and pink-tinted plaster walls built using 19th-century construction methods. The interior spaces showcase period furnishings and decorative details that reflect how upper-class families lived during that era.
John Bidwell, a California pioneer and congressman, built this residence between 1865 and 1868 during his courtship of Annie Ellicott Kennedy. The construction occurred during a period of significant growth and development in California following the Civil War.
The mansion served as a prominent gathering place where educated families and community leaders met for social and cultural events throughout the 1800s. People used the elegant rooms to celebrate milestones and maintain connections with others in the region.
The mansion is accessible through guided hour-long tours, with the ground floor reachable by ramp for visitors with mobility needs. Video presentations are available for those unable to climb stairs to view the upper floors.
The mansion was ahead of its time with advanced systems including modern plumbing, gas lighting, and water distribution networks that were uncommon in the 1860s. These features demonstrate how wealthy residents had access to technologies most people could not afford or obtain.
