Tamolitch Falls is a waterfall in Willamette National Forest, Oregon, that drops into a deep pool of clear water. The water reflects intense blue tones from the underlying volcanic rock, creating a striking appearance.
The waterfall flowed continuously until the 1960s, when water was redirected for hydroelectric power and altered the site. Since then it has run seasonally, most notably during spring snowmelt.
Native American tribes of the McKenzie River area considered this location an important gathering place for natural resources through generations.
The site is accessible via a 3.6-mile round trip hike on McKenzie River Trail that passes through forest and alongside the river. Sturdy footwear is necessary due to uneven terrain and loose rocks along the path.
The water remains extremely cold year-round at about 38 degrees Fahrenheit, preventing microorganism growth in the pool. This intense cold makes it challenging for visitors who might consider entering the water.
