Ladd Carriage House, Carriage house in downtown Portland, US.
The Ladd Carriage House is a wooden building in the Stick style from 1883, featuring vertical boards, decorative trim, and large arched openings. The structure retains its original hayloft with exposed timber trusses, now part of a restaurant space.
William S. Ladd, a Portland banker and entrepreneur, constructed the building in 1883 while building wealth through shipping and rail operations. The structure was relocated in 2007 during nearby construction and returned to its original location in 2008 after extensive restoration.
The building became home to arts and crafts galleries and theater studios starting in the 1920s, serving as a gathering place for the local creative community. People come to see artisanal work and participate in cultural events held within its walls.
The building is easily accessible and located near shops and restaurants in downtown Portland. Plan to spend time walking through the interior to view the historical details from different angles.
The structure weighs around 350 tons and was moved as a single intact unit, a rare engineering feat. The restaurant inside earned LEED Gold certification, blending modern sustainability with historical architecture.
