Ladd Tower, Modern residential tower in Portland, United States
Ladd Tower is a modern residential building in Portland with 23 stories of glass and steel rising 240 feet (73 meters) into the skyline. It contains 332 rental apartments and ground-floor commercial spaces that share the first three levels with an adjacent church.
The building was completed in 2009 after the neighboring Ladd Carriage House was moved from its foundation in 2008 and later returned to its original location. This relocation allowed construction of the tower on the site.
The building reflects Portland's transformation from traditional residential properties to modern vertical living spaces, named after local politician William S. Ladd.
The building is publicly accessible and the surrounding area can be explored freely at any time, with ground-floor public areas easy to reach. Its location near shops and transit makes it simple for visitors to explore the neighborhood.
The original project planned for 189 condominiums but shifted to rental apartments in 2007, leading to a redesign that increased the number of floors while keeping the same total height. This unusual adjustment allowed for more living units within the same footprint.
