Marquam Nature Park, Urban park in Portland, United States.
Marquam Nature Park is an urban forest covering more than 200 acres of Douglas firs and western hemlocks with a network of hiking trails. The landscape features steep ravines and seasonal streams that flow through the woodland.
The park was established in 1979 and named after Philip Marquam, an early settler who arrived in Portland in 1851 and served as a judge. Its creation reflected efforts to preserve forest areas within the growing city.
The Marquam Mosaic, a colorful 2013 artwork by Lynn Takata, decorates a small amphitheater nestled among the trees. Local visitors gather here to experience art displayed within the forest rather than in a gallery setting.
The trails are open year-round and connect to larger loop systems throughout the city, allowing visitors to extend their hikes. Sturdy footwear is recommended due to steep terrain and muddy conditions, especially after rain.
Pileated woodpeckers and barred owls make their homes in this forest, birds that require large mature trees to thrive. Their presence indicates a healthy woodland ecosystem that has recovered from past development.
