Charles Piggott House
Charles Piggott House, Romanesque Revival castle in Southwest Portland, Oregon.
The Charles Piggott House is a Romanesque Revival building with crenellated parapets, a semi-round tower, and brick walls made from Piggott's own manufacturing company. The masonry features carefully crafted details including brick voussoirs and ornamental carved elements throughout.
Charles Henry Piggott built this house in 1892, and it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. This recognition marked its importance as a landmark of local architectural history.
The name Gleall Castle comes from the first letters of Charles Piggott's children's names: Gladys, Earl, and Lloyd. This personal touch shows how deeply the building was tied to family identity and values.
The house sits on the southwestern slopes of the Seventh Street Terraces with views over Portland. Its location makes it accessible from the downtown area while offering vantage points across the city.
The entrance features a moulded rail door with floral-patterned wood inlays and bronze rosettes. These fine crafted details remain visible today and reveal the care taken in the original construction.
