Peninsula Park, Urban park in North Portland, US
Peninsula Park is a 16-acre urban park in North Portland with a central fountain, swimming pool, sports courts, and community facilities. The rose garden section covers 2 acres and contains thousands of rose plants in various varieties across the grounds.
The land was purchased in 1909 and previously served as a horse racing track before transformation. This conversion created Portland's first public rose garden and established the site as a community gathering place.
The Mme Caroline Testout roses grown here became Portland's official flower and helped earn the city its famous nickname. Walking through the garden today, you see these historic roses that connect the place to the city's identity.
The park opens daily at 5 AM and closes at midnight, giving visitors access to sports facilities, a swimming pool, and picnic areas throughout the day. Tennis court lights shut down at 10 PM, so plan evening activities accordingly.
An octagonal bandstand sits in the park as Portland's last remaining structure of this type and holds a listing as a national heritage property. The building continues to host summer concerts and wedding ceremonies throughout the year.
