Denman Island, Island in British Columbia, Canada
Denman Island is an island in British Columbia situated in Baynes Sound between Vancouver Island and Hornby Island. The forested landscape features dense stands of Douglas fir, western hemlock, and red cedar trees, particularly along its western shoreline.
Spanish explorers mapped the island during their 1791 voyage, and Captain Richards named it after British Admiral Joseph Denman in 1860. The island played a role in early regional trade routes connecting the islands of the area.
The indigenous Pentlatch and Sliammon peoples left their mark through middens and gravesites, reflecting their deep connection to this land.
The island is reached by a 10-minute cable ferry ride from Buckley Bay on Vancouver Island, with regular service throughout the day. There are limited facilities on the island, so visitors should plan ahead or bring supplies.
The island is associated with a disease affecting oyster populations that was first identified here in 1960. This discovery became significant in marine biology and aquaculture research.
