Alberni Pacific Railway, Heritage railway site in Port Alberni, Canada
The Alberni Pacific Railway is a historic railway site on the Port Alberni waterfront that houses seven locomotives and about twenty pieces of rolling stock from different periods. The facility uses the 1912 station building as the base for visitor train rides.
The railway began in 1911 and initially served timber operations in the area. It became a vital transport route for the wood industry that shaped the regional economy for decades.
The railway demonstrates how transportation shaped timber operations in this coastal region. Visitors see buildings and equipment that reflect the importance of the wood industry to the community.
Train rides last about 40 minutes and pass over several railway crossings and large wooden trestles. The site is located right on the waterfront and is easy to reach.
One of the locomotives is a 1929 Baldwin steam engine built in Philadelphia that still operates today. This machine is a rare example of industrial craftsmanship from that era.
