Mount Bretherton

Mount Bretherton, Mountain summit in Jefferson County, US

Mount Bretherton is a summit in the Olympic Mountains within Olympic National Park, standing at approximately 1,800 meters (5,900 feet) above sea level. Located south of Upper Lena Lake, this peak is part of a mountain range with significant elevation and challenging terrain.

The peak was named in 1890 by the United States Board on Geographic Names to honor Bernard Joseph Bretherton, a naturalist from the Olympic Mountains Exploring Expedition. This naming reflects the early exploration and documentation efforts of the mountain range.

The peak draws climbers from across the region who document their ascents and share route information with others exploring the Pacific Northwest mountains. Visitors find themselves part of a community of hikers exchanging stories about their experiences on the mountain.

Hikers can reach the summit via an approximately 8-mile (13-kilometer) trail from Upper Lena Lake, with significant elevation gain throughout the route. The best climbing season runs from July through September when snow conditions are most favorable.

The peak's drainage system feeds three separate creeks named Boulder, Delta, and Lena that flow southward into the Hamma Hamma River. These water systems shape the surrounding landscape and influence the hydrology of this mountainous region.
