English Bay, Coastal bay in downtown Vancouver, Canada
English Bay is a coastal bay in central Vancouver that stretches from Stanley Park to Point Grey, separating the city from the Pacific Ocean. Multiple beaches line its shores and are connected by a seawall pathway where people walk, run, and cycle throughout the year.
The area was originally known by the Coast Salish name Ay-yul-shun, referring to the sandy nature of the shoreline before European settlement. The name changed as European explorers arrived and renamed the location.
The bay comes alive during the summer Celebration of Light fireworks festival, when crowds gather along the shore for several nights. This event has become a central part of how locals and visitors experience the waterfront together.
The seawall path is open year-round for walkers, runners, and cyclists, offering a direct route along the bay's edge. Early morning hours tend to be quieter for exploring the shoreline without crowds.
On January first, hundreds of people participate in the Polar Bear Swim, plunging into the bay's icy winter waters. This unusual tradition has become a quirky New Year's Day event that draws brave and adventurous participants.
