The Drop, Steel sculpture at Bon Voyage Plaza in Coal Harbour, Vancouver, Canada
The Drop is a steel sculpture at Bon Voyage Plaza in Coal Harbour standing about 65 feet tall, built with a steel frame covered in foam and blue polyurethane. Its form captures the shape of a water droplet at the instant it makes contact with a surface.
This sculpture was created by German artist collective Inges Idee in 2009 as their first North American project. It was installed as part of an art initiative for the Vancouver Convention Centre.
The blue steel form echoes Vancouver's connection to water and rainfall, themes that residents and visitors notice throughout the year in this wet climate.
The sculpture sits at the end of Burrard Street along the waterfront and can be seen from multiple vantage points. You can view it from the seawalk, the Convention Centre area, or from boats traveling on Burrard Inlet.
The sculpture was temporarily removed during the 2010 Winter Olympics because its position blocked television camera views of athletic competitions. This brief disappearance remains an unusual chapter in the artwork's story.
