Cougar Mountain Zoo, Wildlife conservation facility in Issaquah, United States.
This zoological park on the north slope of Cougar Mountain spans about eleven acres and houses endangered species including Bengal tigers, lemurs, wolves, reindeer, and macaws in thoughtfully designed enclosures. The facilities are spread across the hillside, integrating natural terrain with visitor pathways and viewing areas.
Peter and Marcie Rittler founded the zoo in 1972 and operated it without admission fees for the first fifteen years. The couple later donated it to the Zoological Society of Washington.
Bronze animal sculptures throughout the grounds invite reflection and create focal points along the paths. The Wildlife Museum features educational displays from personal donations that tell stories about the animals and their habitats.
Visitors can explore the grounds on foot using well-marked trails that connect the various enclosures and viewing stations. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended because the terrain is uneven with sloping pathways throughout the hillside location.
A glass-enclosed tunnel allows visitors to observe Bengal tigers at close range, including a rare royal white tiger originally from a Florida facility. This type of intimate viewing experience creates an unforgettable moment of connection with the animals.
