Native American tribes of Snoqualmie, Sammamish, and Duwamish gathered at the southern end of Lake Sammamish for winter festivals and hunting activities.
The name Sammamish derives from the Native American word Samena, which translates to hunter in the indigenous language of the region.
Visitors need to purchase a Discover Pass at thirty dollars annually or ten dollars daily to access the park facilities and parking areas.
The park preserves critical wetland habitats that support a large great blue heron rookery and provides passage for salmon through Issaquah Creek.
