The rectangular facility extends 4,200 feet north to south and 1,250 feet east to west, reaching heights between 45 to 60 feet above ground level.
From 1937 to 1987, this pioneering waste management site introduced systematic trenching, compacting, and daily burial methods that influenced landfill practices across the United States.
The Environmental Protection Agency designated this location as a Superfund site, reflecting changes in environmental awareness and waste management regulations over five decades.
The facility processed approximately 16,500 tons of municipal waste monthly, including food remains, paper materials, metal containers, glass, rubber, wood, and household chemicals.
The groundwater treatment facility, constructed in 2001, continues monitoring and addressing contamination issues from decades of waste accumulation at this 145-acre site.
