Spirit Mountain Wilderness, Nature reserve in Clark County, Nevada, US
Spirit Mountain Wilderness is a nature reserve in the Newberry Mountains spanning tens of thousands of acres with granite boulders, rocky outcrops, and deep canyons. The landscape extends from the edge of Lake Mohave into higher mountainous terrain with varied rock formations and varied topography.
Congress established this wilderness area in 2002 under joint management by the Bureau of Land Management and National Park Service. This designation protected the land from intensive development and preserved its natural character.
Petroglyphs in Grapevine Canyon display abstract patterns, human figures, and animal representations etched into the basalt rock surfaces. These carvings show how Indigenous peoples connected with this land through art and symbolism.
Entry points are located at Christmas Tree Pass Road on the west side and State Highway 163 on the south, with parking areas near Grapevine Canyon. Visitors should be prepared for uneven terrain and bring adequate water and gear for hiking.
Spirit Mountain rises as a white granite monolith that stands out distinctly against the darker rock formations surrounding it. This striking geological feature makes the peak a notable landmark when walking through the wilderness.
