Sycamore Canyon Wilderness

The canyon extends over 20 miles along Sycamore Creek, featuring red sandstone cliffs, white limestone formations, and dense forests of sycamore trees at 14,660 acres.

Congress designated this area as protected wilderness through Public Law 92-241 on March 6, 1972, establishing 48,500 acres of preserved natural environment.

Native American artifacts and rock art throughout the canyon walls provide evidence of ancient settlements and traditional practices in this region.

Visitors need to carry sufficient water supplies and navigation tools, as the wilderness area lacks developed facilities and maintained trail markers.

The canyon spans across three national forests - Coconino, Kaibab, and Prescott - creating a diverse ecosystem where desert meets forest environments.
