Red Mountain Wilderness, Protected wilderness area in Washington County, Utah.
Red Mountain Wilderness is a protected area spanning 18,729 acres with red sandstone formations, deep canyons, and varied desert plants at elevations between 3,300 and 5,400 feet (1,006 to 1,646 meters). The landscape extends from the Santa Clara River on the west to Snow Canyon State Park on the east, displaying black basalt flows contrasting with red and white sandstone.
The area contains seven archaeological sites showing evidence of Southern Paiute settlements within its boundaries. Artifact distributions suggest long-term use and occupation of this landscape by indigenous peoples.
The area draws nature enthusiasts who value its rare blend of Mojave and Great Basin desert ecosystems found within a single landscape. Visitors encounter quiet solitude that reflects how little developed this corner of the region remains today.
The wilderness is accessible from the Leeds exit off Interstate 15, located about 14 miles (22 kilometers) northeast of St. George, with roughly 10 miles (16 kilometers) of maintained trails. Prepare for heat and bring ample water, especially during summer months when conditions are most intense.
The black basalt flows visible in this area result from volcanic activity that creates sharp contrast with surrounding red sandstone formations. This geological contrast forms an unusual visual feature that catches many visitors by surprise.
