The United States Congress established Cottonwood Canyon Wilderness in 2009 through the Omnibus Public Land Management Act to preserve natural landscapes in southwestern Utah.
The territory marks a natural transition between the Colorado Plateau and Mojave Desert ecosystems, supporting diverse plant communities and wildlife populations across different elevations.
Visitors can access hiking and horseback riding trails minutes from Washington County population centers, while motorized vehicles and bicycles remain prohibited in the wilderness.
Desert tortoises, Gila monsters, and chuckwallas inhabit the protected area alongside golden eagles, creating a specialized habitat for both Mojave and Colorado Plateau species.
