Beartrap Canyon Wilderness

Beartrap Canyon Wilderness is a protected natural area in Washington County characterized by dramatic sandstone mesas and steep canyon walls. The terrain rises to elevations around 7,500 feet and sits adjacent to Zion National Park in the broader Colorado Plateau region.

Congress officially designated this area as protected wilderness in 2009 as part of broader federal land management legislation. The designation reflects a commitment to preserve the canyon system in its natural state for future generations.

The Bureau of Land Management oversees this natural space, ensuring strict preservation guidelines that prohibit motorized vehicles and mechanical transportation methods.

Access comes through the LaVerkin Creek Trail, which connects from Zion National Park. Hiking is possible year-round, though autumn and spring offer the most comfortable conditions for exploring.

The area serves as habitat for Mexican spotted owls and mountain lions that roam the remote canyons. This lesser-frequented location remains overlooked by many visitors despite its ecological importance.
