Taylor Creek Wilderness, Protected wilderness area near Kolob Canyons, Zion National Park, Utah
Taylor Creek Wilderness is a protected wilderness area near Kolob Canyons in Zion National Park featuring steep canyons carved through red Navajo Sandstone. The canyon walls rise approximately 1,000 feet (300 meters) above the creek bed, creating dramatic terrain with narrow passages between rock formations.
The area received official protection in 2009 when Congress passed the Omnibus Public Land Management Act designating it as wilderness. This action recognized the ecological importance of the landscape and secured its undeveloped character for future preservation.
The Bureau of Land Management preserves this natural space as category Ib wilderness, maintaining its untamed character for future generations.
Access to the wilderness is easiest during warmer months when snow and ice have cleared from the high elevation terrain. Sturdy footwear is essential since the rocky canyon floors are uneven and drainage paths can be slippery even after rainfall.
The wilderness protects the source streams of Taylor Creek, which winds through narrow passages between towering rock walls. This headwater system feeds downstream rivers that eventually connect to larger water systems in the region.
