Carson Range, Mountain range in Washoe County, United States
The Carson Range is a mountain chain spanning multiple counties across Nevada and California, running roughly north to south along the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada system. Its ridges form a natural wall between the lower desert basins to the east and the higher peaks to the west.
The range was named during the Frémont Expedition of 1844 by European explorers after Kit Carson, a member of that expedition party. This naming marked when the area became documented in European records and maps.
The Washoe people inhabited the Carson Range area for thousands of years, using its resources and establishing settlements throughout the mountainous terrain.
The Mount Rose Wilderness section contains numerous hiking trails, including portions of the Tahoe Rim Trail, reachable from Reno and Carson City. Terrain is steep in places and trails vary in difficulty, so proper preparation is important for visitors.
The range creates a rain shadow effect, causing Reno and Carson City to receive significantly less snowfall than the neighboring western mountains. This difference makes the climate on each side of the chain quite different.
