Trésor Regional Nature Reserve, Regional nature reserve in Roura, French Guiana

Trésor Regional Nature Reserve is a protected woodland area on the southwestern side of Kaw Mountain, situated between a provincial road and the Orapu River. It contains both swamp forests and wet savannahs, creating a mosaic of different natural environments.

During glacial periods, this area served as a refuge for many species, allowing biodiversity to flourish over time. This role as a safe haven during climate changes explains why so many plants and animals thrive here today.

The Palikur Amerindians of the area have actively opposed mining projects to protect their forest environment. Their commitment reflects how deeply the local community values maintaining this natural landscape.

The reserve features several walking trails that wind through different ecosystems, with guided tours available if you prefer expert company. The terrain varies from swampy ground to open savannah, so wear appropriate footwear and check weather conditions before visiting.

Carnivorous plants like sundew and bladderwort grow in the wet savannahs, making this reserve an unusual place to find such creatures. These plants are easy to miss at first glance, but they reveal how specialized the ecosystem has become.
