Riverton, city in Salt Lake County, Utah, United States
Riverton is a city in the Salt Lake Valley, Utah, situated on a gentle rise west of the Jordan River about twenty miles south of Salt Lake City. The town spreads across flat terrain with views of surrounding landscapes and contains over 45,000 residents, 33 parks, sports facilities including Riverbend Golf Course and Hamilton Sports Complex, plus the Jordan River Parkway Trail for outdoor activities.
Riverton began as Gardnersville, named after Archibald Gardner, the first settler in the area around the 1850s, with the name officially changed to Riverton in 1879. The town became incorporated in 1946 after irrigation canals built in the 1870s transformed agriculture by bringing water to previously dry land.
Riverton grew from farming families who valued water access and shared labor, traditions still reflected in the town's community gatherings and events. The annual Town Days celebration brings neighbors together and reinforces the local identity that developed over generations.
The city has good road access via Interstate 15, Bangerter Highway, and other main routes, making it easy to reach from surrounding areas. Parks, sports facilities, and trails are spread throughout town and easily accessible on foot or by car for outdoor activities and recreation.
The Old Dome Meeting Hall at Riverton City Park features distinctive domed architecture that served as a community gathering place in the town's early years. This structure reflected Romanesque style and was notably refined for a rural area, showing how much the community valued a central meeting space.
