Ostrovica Fortress, Medieval fortress in Kulen Vakuf, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Ostrovica is the ruins of a medieval fortress on a hill above the Una River in Kulen Vakuf. The remains show strong defensive walls with multiple entrances and spread across a considerable area.
The fortress was built in medieval times and became an important possession of Bosnian nobility. Later it was modified and expanded by the Ottomans before eventually being abandoned.
The fortress shows traces of different peoples who lived and ruled here over the centuries. Visitors can still see how medieval and Ottoman building styles exist side by side.
The fortress ruins are located in the Una-Sana region and can be explored on foot along the trails around the site. It is helpful to wear sturdy footwear since the paths are rough and uneven.
The ruins contain remains of two separate observation posts that once guarded different sections of the fortress. These strategic positions helped monitor large stretches of the valley below.
