Skakavitsa

Skakavitsa is a nature reserve in the Rila Mountains featuring a valley with a prominent waterfall and steep forest-covered slopes. Dense stands of endemic Macedonian pine trees fill the landscape at high elevation, creating a continuous woodland that surrounds the central valley.

The reserve was established under government protection in 1968 to safeguard the old-growth forests and mountain ecosystems of the area. This early designation as a protected zone demonstrated commitment to preserving the natural character of this remote valley.

The name Skakavitsa comes from the Bulgarian word for 'to jump', describing how water moves down the mountain slope. This simple name tells visitors right away what they will witness when they arrive.

Visitors access the reserve on marked hiking trails that depart from Skakavitsa Hut and lead into the valley below. Early summer provides the most favorable weather for walking and observing the natural features without difficulty.

The waterfall ranks among the highest in the mountain range and transforms into an ice climbing spot during winter months. This dual nature as a summer hiking destination and winter climbing venue makes the location unusual and memorable.
