Skakavitsa Waterfall, Natural waterfall in Rila Mountains, Bulgaria.

Skakavitsa is a waterfall in the Rila Mountains of Bulgaria, dropping in a single cascade over a rocky face with a total height of 70 m (about 230 ft). It sits at high elevation and is surrounded by old pine forests that cover the slopes around the rocky outcrop.

The area around the waterfall was opened to regular visitors in the early 1900s, when a mountain hut was built to give hikers a place to stay. Before that, the site was largely known only to local shepherds and people who worked in the surrounding high pastures.

The name Skakavitsa comes from the Bulgarian verb 'skacham', which describes the bouncing movement of water as it hits the rocks. This direct connection between a local word and a physical observation is something visitors often notice once they stand close enough to watch the water fall.

The waterfall is reached by following marked trails from a nearby mountain hut, which also serves as a good base for the walk. Spring brings the strongest flow, but the paths can still be slippery from snow and mud, so sturdy footwear is a good idea whatever the season.

A nature reserve was created in 1968 specifically to protect the ancient Macedonian pine forests that grow on the slopes around the waterfall. These trees grow very slowly at high elevation and are some of the oldest of their kind found anywhere in this part of Europe.
