Kupените rises to an elevation of 2731 meters, forming part of a ridge that extends from Maliovitsa Peak through Eleni Peak and Orlovec.

The first documented climb of the Middle Kupen occurred on September 29, 1953, when mountaineers Boris Marinov and Kiril Petrov reached the summit.

The peak's name derives from its shape resembling haystacks, reflecting the agricultural heritage and traditional observations of local Bulgarian communities.

The ascent from Maliovitsa Hut to Kupените requires approximately two hours during summer conditions, with Strashnoto Lake shelter serving as a base point.

The north face of Small Kupen contains challenging climbing sections composed of granite and biotite schists, attracting technical climbers throughout the year.
