Купените, Mountain summit group in Rila, Bulgaria

Kupenten is a multi-peaked mountain in the Rila Range made up of several connected summits along a ridge. The peaks vary in height, with the highest point reaching approximately 2731 meters (8963 feet) above sea level.

The name Kupenite formerly covered all peaks from Popova Kapa to Eleni Vrah; each summit now has its own name. The group comprises four rocky tops on the Malyovishki ridge, the highest being Golyam Kupen at 2731 m, the highest point of northwestern Rila. The ridge and massif still carry the Malyovitsa name, after the peak seen as the symbol of Bulgarian alpinism.

The name Kupenite is the plural of "kupen", a word for a rocky peak, and older sources also called these summits Kupni or Rupi. The group runs from Popova Kapa to Eleni Vrah, and each summit now has its own name. A street in Sofia's Bakston quarter is named after Kupenite.

There is no permanent waymarked trail to the Kupenite or along their ridge; only small stone cairns mark the way, and the crossing is suited to experienced mountaineers alone. From Strashnoto Lake the first three summits stand directly in view, while the Golyam Kupen is set slightly aside, partly hidden by the short rib descending to the lake.

The north wall of Malyk Kupen rises 90 m of granite and biotite schist, vertical in its middle and gently sloping above and below, with a large grassy terrace at the end of its first third. The walls of Sreden Kupen carry several climbing routes; its northwest wall leans over in the first 80 m, with smooth slabs, small roofs and narrow, sometimes blind cracks. The rock is solid but almost always wet and slippery, and in places cut by quartz veins.
