Rila Monastery, Eastern Orthodox monastery in Rila Mountains, Bulgaria
Rila Monastery is a stone complex nestled in Bulgaria's mountains with a central church topped by five domes at its heart. Four stories of monks' living quarters surround this inner church, all enclosed by thick walls built in a fortress style.
Saint John of Rila founded this monastery in the 10th century, establishing it as a spiritual center in medieval Bulgaria. It continued to develop and gain importance as a place of religious learning and practice through the following centuries.
The frescoes painted across the monastery walls depict biblical scenes and the lives of saints, created by Bulgarian artists over centuries. Walking through the courtyards and church, visitors encounter these religious images as part of the daily setting.
The complex houses a museum displaying religious objects, manuscripts, and documents spanning more than 1000 years of Bulgarian history. Comfortable walking shoes are important since the site covers a large area with many paths and courtyards to explore.
The Rafail Cross, a wooden carving housed in the museum, contains 104 religious scenes and 650 miniature figures all carved into its surface. This intricate work stands out as one of the monastery's most impressive artistic achievements.

Circular architecture has fascinated builders since ancient times. This collection brings together Roman amphitheatres like the Colosseum, medieval towers such as the Round Tower in Copenhagen, baroque domed structures and modern constructions. The circular form offers practical advantages for acoustic properties, structural stability and optimal space usage. The selected buildings serve various functions: religious temples, fortifications, observatories, museums and event venues. Each example demonstrates how architects have adapted the circular form to local conditions and cultural requirements. From ancient stone structures to contemporary skyscrapers, this selection documents technical evolution across centuries.
