Sapphire Tower, Skyscraper project in Yonge-Bay Corridor, Toronto, Canada
Sapphire Tower was a planned skyscraper in Toronto's Yonge-Bay Corridor designed to stand 196 meters tall with 62 floors combining residential and commercial spaces. The structure featured distinctive blue glass curtain walls as its primary design element.
The project was rejected by Toronto and East York Community Council in 2005 over concerns about impact on Nathan Phillips Square near City Hall. Following this decision, the site eventually transformed into INDX Tower, which was completed in 2016.
The building reflected Toronto's evolving architectural preferences, integrating modern design elements while considering the preservation of downtown neighborhood character.
The site is located at 66 Temperance Street in downtown Toronto. Since the original project was never built, visitors today see the completed INDX Tower structure that replaced the earlier plans.
The project's developer filed for bankruptcy protection in 2007, triggering a chain of ownership changes for the property. It was eventually sold to CentreCourt Developments for approximately 39 million Canadian dollars.
