Whytecliff Park, Marine Protected Area in West Vancouver, Canada
Whytecliff Park is a marine protected area on the coast of West Vancouver, made up of rocky shores, pebble beaches, and small coves along Howe Sound. Hiking trails connect several viewpoints that look out over the water and surrounding peaks.
The park was established in 1909, making it one of the first marine protected areas in Canada. Over the following decades, conservation measures were strengthened to protect the underwater environment of Howe Sound.
Whytecliff Park is one of the most visited diving destinations on Canada's West Coast, drawing divers who enter the water directly from the rocky shore. Watching them gear up and slip beneath the surface is a familiar sight for anyone spending time at the beach.
The best time to explore the beach and rocky areas is at low tide, when more of the shoreline becomes accessible. Paid parking is available near the main beach area, which also has restroom facilities close by.
A small rock outcrop just offshore, known as Whyte Islet, can be reached on foot at low tide via a natural land bridge that appears briefly. Many visitors walk past it without realizing the crossing is possible.
