The settlement started in 1891 when pioneers under Father Jean-Isidoire Gaire began establishing homes at Fourth Creek. It was formally established as an organized hamlet in 1892.
The Sisters of the Cross established a school in 1905 to teach French language and Catholic faith to local students. This shaped the religious and linguistic identity of the community for many generations.
