Nam Shan Estate, Public rental housing estate in Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong.
Nam Shan Estate is a public housing complex with seven residential blocks situated at the junction of Pei Ho Street and Tung Chau Street in Sham Shui Po. The development contains roughly 1,900 rental units along with a central marketplace where daily shopping and dining happen.
The site was formerly occupied by Sham Shui Po Barracks, a British military installation that operated from 1910 until 1977. During World War II, the location was used as a Japanese concentration camp.
The marketplace within the estate comes alive with food vendors selling traditional local dishes like cart noodles, egg waffles, and dim sum at different times of day. This food culture reflects how residents spend their time and where neighbors naturally gather together.
The estate sits near exit B2 of Shek Kip Mei station, making it easy to reach by public transportation and providing quick access to local markets and community facilities. Everything you need for a walk around the complex and to explore the marketplace is within immediate reach.
Since 2012, City University has occupied half of the estate's parking facility, converting upper levels into classrooms while keeping vehicle storage below. This dual-use arrangement shows how space is stretched to serve multiple purposes in a crowded urban area.
