Wukang Mansion, Historical apartment building in Xuhui District, Shanghai.
Wukang Mansion is an eight-story residential building featuring French Renaissance architecture, located at the intersection of Wukang Road and Huaihai Middle Road in Shanghai. Its distinctive triangular footprint adapts to the site while displaying carefully designed facades with ornamental details.
The building was constructed in 1924 by the International Savings Society and originally named Normandie Apartments. It served as housing for foreign company employees until 1942, reflecting Shanghai's international character during that period.
The French Renaissance style shows in the ornamental facades and bay windows that define the building's presence on the street. Residents and visitors experience how these architectural details shape the character of daily life in the neighborhood.
The building contains residential units across multiple wings and shops on the lower floors, with various entrances affecting access and navigation. Its historical layout means some areas feature narrow stairwells and varying room sizes, which is worth noting when exploring.
Hungarian architect Ladislaus Hudec designed the building to maximize the triangular plot, creating Shanghai's first corridor-style apartment building. This innovative floor plan later became a model for other residential developments in the city.
