Soong Ching-ling Memorial Residence, Memorial residence in Xuhui District, China.
The Soong Ching-ling Memorial Residence is a white three-story building on Middle Huaihai Road in the Xuhui District of Shanghai. The property is surrounded by camphor trees, and the interior preserves the original furnishings and personal belongings of its former occupant.
Soong Ching-ling moved into the building in the late 1940s, shortly after the founding of the People's Republic of China. She lived there until her death in 1981, after which the house was turned into a memorial museum.
The residence was the private home of Soong Ching-ling, widow of Sun Yat-sen, for over a decade. Visitors today can see her books, personal objects, and furniture arranged much as they were during her time there.
The site sits on one of Shanghai's main thoroughfares and is easy to reach on foot from the surrounding area. It is worth checking opening hours in advance, as they can vary depending on the season.
Although Soong Ching-ling officially used the house until the early 1960s, she continued to return and stay there regularly until shortly before her death. The grounds also hold the grave of her longtime housekeeper, a rare detail for an urban memorial site.
