Jao Tsung-I Academy, Cultural museum in Sham Shui Po District, Hong Kong
The Jao Tsung-I Academy is a museum and historic site in Sham Shui Po District, Hong Kong, spread across several hillside buildings with exhibition rooms and event spaces. The complex includes five two-story structures in brick and concrete, connected by outdoor staircases and paved paths.
The buildings were constructed in the early 20th century as a customs station and later served as a quarantine facility for arriving travelers. Over the following decades they housed a hospital and a mental health clinic before reopening as a cultural center in 2012.
The academy honors one of the most respected Chinese scholars of the 20th century, whose calligraphy and research on East Asian culture are displayed throughout the galleries. Visitors can walk through rooms showing his work on Chinese poetry and ancient scripts.
The site sits about a ten-minute walk from Mei Foo MTR station and is reached by a hillside path with several staircases. The rooms are open during the day, though some areas may be reserved for events or guest accommodation.
The complex combines old administrative buildings with guest rooms that can be used for longer cultural stays. A teahouse and small gardens between the structures offer quiet spots to rest between exhibition visits.
