Lizard Head Wilderness, Nature reserve in San Miguel County, United States.
Lizard Head Wilderness is a large protected area in the Rocky Mountains featuring diverse landscapes of mountain peaks, alpine meadows, waterfalls, and dense forests. The terrain varies from forested lower elevations to bare high ridges with different plant communities at each level.
The area received official protection in 1980 through the Colorado Wilderness Act and was added to the National Wilderness Preservation System. This designation ensured the land would be managed to maintain its wild character and natural resources.
Native American tribes utilized this land for generations, finding essential resources among its peaks and valleys before European settlement began in the region.
The area is accessible only on foot or by traditional means since motorized vehicles are not permitted. Visitors should plan hiking routes and use the established paths that wind through the different landscapes.
The peak that gives the wilderness its name is known for technically challenging climbing routes that demand serious mountaineering experience. Despite standing above 13,000 feet, it ranks among the more difficult ascents in the area.
