Former Residence of Hu Shi, National heritage residence in Shangzhuang, China.
The Former Residence of Hu Shi is a traditional Chinese building with several structures arranged around courtyards that preserve the original layout from the early 20th century. The rooms show how they looked during his time and remain largely unchanged.
The building was created in the late Qing Dynasty when the country was undergoing major change and new ideas were emerging. Hu Shi, one of the most important thinkers of his time, lived there and made it a place that reflected his intellectual life.
The rooms display personal objects that show how Hu Shi lived and worked here while spreading ideas about Chinese literature and education. You see traces throughout of his daily engagement with writing and thinking.
The site is best explored on foot since the various buildings and courtyards are close together and you can move slowly to see everything. Weather matters, so visiting on dry days works best.
One of the studies still contains his original desk where he wrote some of his most influential work. At this very spot much emerged that changed Chinese literature and thought of his era.
