Wheeler Peak, Mountain summit in Sangre de Cristo range, New Mexico, United States

Wheeler Peak rises to 13,161 feet, making it the highest natural elevation point in New Mexico with alpine meadows and forested slopes.

The peak received its current name in 1950 to recognize Major George Montague Wheeler, who conducted geological surveys across the Southwest in the 1870s.

The mountain borders Taos Pueblo lands, where Native American tribes maintain their connection through annual ceremonies during late August closures.

Two main routes lead to the summit: the 16-mile Bull-of-the-Woods Trail and the steeper 7-mile Williams Lake Trail from Taos Ski Valley.

The mountain's treeline extends beyond 12,000 feet, creating an environment where forests grow at higher elevations than typical for North American peaks.
