D. H. Lawrence Ranch, Historic ranch in Taos County, New Mexico.
D.H. Lawrence Ranch is a historic property in the mountains north of Taos situated at roughly 8,600 feet elevation. The 160-acre site features pine forests and mountain views, with several period buildings that show how Lawrence and his wife lived during their time here.
English writer D.H. Lawrence and his wife received this property as a gift from Mabel Dodge Luhan in 1924. It became their only owned home and served as their retreat during the final years of his life.
The property holds a 1934 memorial building where Lawrence's remains are preserved within the fabric of the place itself. Visitors can see how the site reflects his deep attachment to this mountain land and its role as a refuge during his life.
The property is open to visitors Thursday through Saturday and is managed by the University of New Mexico. Guided tours take visitors through the historic buildings and around the grounds.
Artist Georgia O'Keeffe created her noted painting The Lawrence Tree while visiting the property. The work depicts a pine on the grounds where Lawrence often worked.
