Conejos County spans 1,290 square miles across the San Luis Valley, with the San Juan Mountains rising to 13,000 feet in the western section.
The Colorado legislature established Conejos County in November 1861 as one of the original 17 counties, initially naming it Guadalupe County for one week.
Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Conejos stands as Colorado's first church, marking the beginning of organized religious structures in the state.
The county contains five incorporated municipalities: Manassa, La Jara, Antonito, Sanford, and Romeo, with government services centered in the unincorporated town of Conejos.
The Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad operates from Antonito through mountain passes to Chama, New Mexico, maintaining its original 1880 route.
