Lake San Cristobal, Mountain lake in Hinsdale County, United States.
Lake San Cristobal is a high-altitude mountain lake in the San Juan Mountains sitting at about 9,000 feet elevation with depths reaching roughly 90 feet. The shoreline is ringed by dense forest and steep slopes that create a sheltered basin for the water.
The lake formed roughly 700 years ago when a massive landslide called the Slumgullion Earthflow created a natural dam across the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River. This geological event shaped the landscape into the basin that exists today.
The lake carries the Spanish name of Saint Christopher and shapes the identity of nearby Lake City, which takes its name from this body of water. Local residents view it as a central part of their community's story and gather here throughout the year.
Wupperman Campground sits on the lake shore with tent sites and basic facilities like vault toilets and picnic tables for day use or overnight stays. The campground opens seasonally during warmer months, making it the main base for anyone planning to spend time at the water.
The lake maintains its stability because its foundation is made of non-porous material that holds water rather than allowing it to drain away. A natural spillway carved into bedrock allows excess water to overflow safely, which is why this body of water has persisted for centuries.
