Lathrop State Park

Lathrop State Park is a protected landscape spanning about 1,600 acres with two lakes named Horseshoe and Martin. The property features numerous trails winding through the land, offering views of two major mountain ranges nearby.

Founded in 1962, this was Colorado's first state park and honors Harold W. Lathrop, who served as the initial director of the state's parks and recreation authority. The establishment represented a major step in the state's commitment to land preservation.

The territory holds historical significance as a location of encounters between Spanish conquistadors and Comanche tribes during the late 1600s.

The area has campsites and picnic grounds spread throughout, plus trails open to visitors year-round. Spring and fall typically offer the most comfortable conditions for hiking and exploring the grounds.

The property is home to Colorado's only golf course located within any state park. This unusual mix of outdoor recreation and sport draws visitors seeking both activities in a single location.
