Startup Candy Factory, historic commercial building in Provo, Utah, United States

Startup Candy Factory is a Victorian-era historic building constructed in 1895 in Provo, Utah, featuring two stories with a basement. The structure displays commercial and warehouse elements with detailed windows and decorative brickwork that stand out in the downtown location.

The factory was established in 1895 by the Startup family after William Daw Startup came to Utah with recipes from England and built the candy business from the ground up. The company grew to become the largest candy producer in the western states, survived the Great Depression, and was added to the Provo City Historic Landmarks registry in 1996.

The name comes from William Startup, the founder whose family ran the factory for generations. Visitors can still sense the connection to candy-making today, as a candy store operates in the building and continues the family's tradition of handcrafted sweets.

The building is located in downtown Provo and is easy to find due to its preserved Victorian architectural features. Visitors can view the facade at any time from the street, and the candy store inside offers a practical way to experience the factory's tradition.

William Startup, the original founder from England, dreamed of moving to America and named his candies "American Cough Candy" even though he never made the journey himself. His son then fulfilled that dream by bringing the family and business to Utah and establishing a candy-making tradition that has lasted over 150 years.
