Centennial Carillon Tower, Bell tower at Brigham Young University, Provo, US.
The Centennial Carillon Tower is a bell tower on the campus of Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, housing 52 bells of different sizes. The tower is built from light-colored stone and rises clearly above the surrounding campus buildings.
The tower opened in 1975 as a gift marking the 100th anniversary of Brigham Young University. It was designed by architect Fred L. Markham and has been part of the campus ever since.
The bells play a melody based on the hymn 'Come, Come, Ye Saints' every hour and ring during graduations and campus events. Anyone spending time on campus notices this sound as a natural part of the day.
Climbing the tower involves a narrow spiral staircase and a few ladder rungs, so visitors should wear sturdy shoes and feel comfortable in tight spaces. From the top, there is a broad view over the campus and the surrounding mountains.
This tower is the only bell tower owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints among all its religious buildings worldwide. The bells are played by trained carillonneurs using a keyboard inside the tower, not by automated systems.
