Grizzly Peak, Mountain summit in Summit County, Colorado, United States
Grizzly Peak is a 13,988-foot mountain located in the northwestern section of the Sawatch Range. It rises above McNasser Gulch and forms a distinct summit within this mountain chain.
The summit was explored by mountaineers as part of the active development of the Sawatch Range in this area. The route became a known destination for hikers and climbers in the region.
Local mountaineers frequently traverse between Grizzly Peak and Garfield Peak, establishing a traditional class 2+ climbing route through the mountain range.
To reach the mountain, drive west from Denver on I-70, take Colorado Highway 91, and head south over Fremont Pass toward Leadville. Then follow CO 82 to the trailhead and prepare for steeper sections along the route.
The Grizzly Couloir holds snow well into summer and offers a rare chance for climbers to experience an extended season. This distinctive gully on the mountainside stays shaded and cool for much of the year.
