Grizzly Peak, Mountain summit in Summit County, Colorado, United States
Grizzly Peak is a mountain summit in the Sawatch Range of central Colorado, reaching about 14,000 feet (4,267 m). It rises above McNasser Gulch and stands as a distinct summit within this mountain chain.
The summit was explored by mountaineers during the early mapping and climbing of the Sawatch Range. Over time, the route to the top became a recognized destination for hikers and climbers in the region.
Mountaineers often link Grizzly Peak with the nearby Garfield Peak along a class 2+ route that has become a standard traverse in the area. This connection is well known among experienced hikers in the Sawatch Range.
The trailhead is accessible from Highway 82, and most visitors park near the starting point before heading out on foot. The route includes steeper sections, so sturdy footwear and plenty of water are a good idea.
The Grizzly Couloir, a narrow gully on the mountainside, holds snow well into summer, giving climbers a longer season than most nearby peaks. The gully stays in the shade for much of the year, which keeps it noticeably cooler than the surrounding terrain.
