Mount Democrat, Mountain summit in Park County and Lake County, United States.
Mount Democrat is a mountain summit in the Mosquito Range of Colorado, USA, rising to about 14,152 feet (4,312 m) above sea level. The upper terrain is open and rocky, with loose scree fields and wide views of the surrounding high peaks along the ridge.
The peak was known first as Republic Mountain, then as Mount Buckskin, before receiving its current name in 1883, linked to a nearby settlement in the area. Since then, the ridge has grown into one of the most visited high-altitude destinations in the western United States.
Mount Democrat belongs to the group of Colorado peaks above 14,000 feet known as "Fourteeners," which many climbers work through as a personal checklist. It is often combined in a single day with Mount Cameron, Mount Lincoln, and Mount Bross along the same ridge.
The climb starts from the Kite Lake trailhead, which sits at high elevation and is most accessible in summer once snow has cleared from the trail. Setting out early in the morning is strongly advised, as afternoon thunderstorms are common on the ridge.
Although the summit sits on the border between Park County and Lake County, a private conservation organization purchased portions of the surrounding land in 2021 and transferred them to the United States Forest Service. This type of private-to-federal land transfer is an uncommon way of protecting high mountain terrain in the country.
