Lost Creek Wilderness, Protected wilderness area in Pike National Forest, Colorado
Lost Creek Wilderness is a protected area in Pike National Forest featuring granite peaks, thick forest cover, and mountain streams spread across elevations between 8,000 and 12,400 feet. The landscape encompasses a large territory with diverse natural zones.
The area gained initial protection as a scenic zone in 1963 and received National Natural Landmark status in 1966. Wilderness designation came in 1980, reinforcing long-term protection of the landscape.
Indigenous peoples utilized the natural resources of this region before European settlement, leaving behind evidence of their presence in the Colorado landscape.
Access is available through several entry points with over 200 miles of trails distributed throughout the area for exploration. The Colorado Trail provides a popular access route through the northern section for many visitors.
The waterway repeatedly vanishes underground and reappears in unexpected locations, a behavior that inspired the area's name. This hydrological quirk makes it a fascinating feature for those exploring the region's geological character.
